The model leverages digital platforms to connect workers with employers for specific tasks or projects. Examples include ride-sharing services like Uber, freelance marketplaces such as Upwork, and short-term rental platforms like Airbnb. This change is fuelled by technological advancements, evolving worker preferences, and a growing need for flexible work options.

The Rise of the Gig Economy

The gig economy describes a labour market where employment is based on short-term contracts or freelance work, rather than traditional permanent positions. In recent years, this model has gained considerable popularity, with an estimated 35% to 40% of the U.S. workforce engaged in gig work by the end of 2020. Several factors contribute to this rise:
